There are about 3 million truck drivers on the road and 50,000 new ones each year! Most will never figure it out. I talk to countless truck drivers every week who have been working for the same companies for years. These truck drivers make $30,000 to $40,000 a year and are only home every 2-3 weeks. I made more per mile my first year with my trucking company than I would have in 10 years for most companies!

In Dec'09, over 85,000 jobs were lost. With the estimated 7,500 trucking jobs lost in October more than doubled the September number, bring the total to 11,100 in the past two months. The trucking industry has lost 144,500 jobs since January – a decline of 5.8 percent. Job cuts since July 2008 – just before the current decline – total 204,800. The BLS numbers reflect all payroll employment in for-hire trucking, but they don’t include trucking-related jobs in other industries, such as a truck driver for a private fleet. The BLS said 1,249,800 persons were employed in the industry in October.

With that scenario playing out every day across America, CDL jobs still continue to provide decent, secured employment. We could see driver jobs become a little tougher to achieve as millions of jobs are lost during this poor economy, and those people search for new vocations, but the need for our transportation system to continue is vital. This vitality assures that driving jobs will continue to be an excellent vocation for security...as long as you know the good trucking companies from the bad.
