Trucker Toys

It use to be not so far in the past that all you needed for trucking was a good map a CB radio and a good AM/FM radio and you were pretty much set to go trucking anywhere in the country. But oh how the times have changed. There are now all kind of trucker toys for you to place in your truck to make your trip go by faster. Trucking has gone High Tech in a big way. The number of technological toys available is increasing daily. You can now do pretty much in your truck all that you can do at home. And believe me there are a lot of truckers who spend most of there time on the road and away from home some by choice but more by necessity of wanting to make more money. Here are a few of my favorite trucker toys that I now consider to be a necessity. A good CB Radio. Some people say the CB is a dying technology. But it still has its place in the truck. In more recent years, CB has lost much of its original appeal due to the advancement of technologies and changing values. Some of this rapid development includes: cell phones, the Internet and GPS systems. Professional drivers use CB radio for everything from keeping an eye on speed traps to checking in at the delivery dock and making idle conversation with anyone in range. Right behind the professionals are private citizens who use CB radio when they drive for many of the same reasons.

Next a good TV with a DVR built in is another good item to have in the truck. They come in several sizes and most run on 12 volt which means you can plug them into the cigarette light rather than having to buy a power inverter. Some Laptop Computers now come with built in TV viewing system which could save you for having to buy both.

Laptops are a multi-use tool that can provide maps, directions, weather information, internet connections and entertainment during no-driving hours such as games and DVR for the latest movies. With just a wireless network card, a laptop, truckers can spend hours surfing the Web, e-mailing friends and filing paperwork -- without ever having to leave their trucks.

Nowadays the use of GPS for Trucks is increasing. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.
